The purple stamping in the guarantee page, above, reads "experimental". This stamp, combined with the low serial number, implies that this may have been a prototype machine. Great find, Sergei!

Prior to December 1998, the two images below were the only known images of the MK-40 machine. This highlights one of the aspects of collecting Soviet calculators that I find really enjoyable - the hunt! As with this, and many other machines, gathering information is a slow process - usually many sources contribute to the knowledge about models and their capabilities. The comparison between the two images from articles/books, and the actual machine, is interesting. The variation in the key size in the top row implies that the one on the left was drawn from a description, and the one on the right from an actual machine or picture of a machine.
