Power Sources

This page shows some of the batteries, transformers and other power-related items which are associated with calculators from the former Soviet Union. As you can see, some of these items are quite alien to western eyes. The Russian AC power grid appears to be 220V, 50Hz. Fortunately, this is close enough to the Australian standard of 240V that I can safely test most of the calculators which are powered by transformers.

side view
The unusual "land-mine" appearance of Soviet button-cells.

"Russians call AA's "A316", and they have a bunch of the button / disc / can / lozenge / land-mine shaped ones, that they call D-0.55C (B3-18A, B3-19M, B3-21, B3-34 four of these) (might be same as D-0.25, 3 of which are in B3-36, 4 in B3-35?), D-0.1 (four in C3-33), D-0.06 (two in B3-30), STS-32 (3 in B3-39), STS-30 (2 in B3-38), and finally the STNK-0.45 (4 in C3-15). I do not know what they all look like, I think the smallest is (cyrillic)D-0.06, then D-0.1, D-0.25 and D-0.55C is largest."

Battery pack of type A316 (=AA), as packaged with C3-27 calculator.

C3-15 pack
Contents of a C3-15 battery-pack. Note the corrosion-residue bottom-right; not only will this damage a calculator interior, it is probably highly-toxic. Be sure to remove batteries from any calculator when it is not being used!

Sadly, many of the batteries are now more than a decade old, and show significant signs of leakage. I keep them sealed in plastic bags, to avoid damage to calculator internals. I haven't yet broached, with my wife, the need to reserve some freezer space for preservation purposes. The icon marking on the top of the batteries and transformers indicate the factory in which the item was made, and they usually have a date code in the form of a roman numeral month (not always present), followed by a two digit year. Sometimes, the price of the item is also listed.
