This machine is currently only known from the manual shown here. This machine used relays. A relay is an on/off electromechanical switch, once widely used in telephone-switching circuits. Relays consist of an electromagnet (a coil of wire wrapped around a spool) which closes an electrical circuit when power is applied. Relays operated rather fast, hundreds of on/off cycles per minute.
