It occurred to me a while back that small sperical mirrors might work in place of transparent beads in a bead disk. One might get away with shiny round-headed pins. Of course, the illumination would need to be on the viewing side of the disk and so the disk would have to be matt black. The effect is similar - a tiny image of the LED would be seen which follows the pin head.

Generally, that is done by replacing the beads with ball bearings.
