My crappy televisor Mark 1!

Postby Metallica Man X » Tue May 07, 2013 6:46 am

Yeah. figured I'd post up a pic or two of my junk machine :D

It's literally made from stuff I had sitting on or around my desk.

Well, except for the wood..had that in a scrap pile in the garage 8)

I used a piece of styrene that I had left over from another projekt. Made the disk using a printout from my compy. Used the DXF Nipkow generator program for that...

Light is provided by a single ultra-bright white LED, which is driven by a LM-386 amp (there's a 2nd LM-386 for sound too).

The brightness and contrast aren't the best by any means, but hey, it works!

The diffuser is made up of a cereal box, and some plastic grocery bag material...which works quite nicely actually.

The motor I used is an xbox 360 controller rumble motor. Speed control (what little there is) is done through a pot and a pushbutton...

The pot is 10 ohm, and the pushbutton has 2 positions. The open position goes straight from the pot to the motor. When pressed, it adds 10 ohms of resistance from the pot to the motor.

For what it is, it's pretty effective. Once you get the hang of it, you hardly notice your button tapping

Ugh...the picture of it running is awful, but it's the best I could do with one hand on the sync thingy and the other holding the camera best I can...should probably invest in a small tripod or something...

It may not be the greatest televisor creation by any means, but it's a nice thing to play with. Perhaps I'll build a better looking one in the future that uses a precision made disk instead of my hand cut piece of plastic....

Well done you used junk you had ..... made your own Nipkow ,i am more impressed with this than buying a laser cut Nipkow with spot on lines /
you should be proud of the result better than i ever did on my first go .
The electromagnetic spectrum has no theoretical limit at either end. If all the mass/energy in the Universe is considered a 'limit', then that would be the only real theoretical limit to the maximum frequency attainable.

I echo Harry's comment, that is a mad awesome picture and I think it's really cool how one can slap together a very workable device from household items. I do that a lot with my televisors, I tend to take preference to grab whatever's at hand in the garage than go out and order parts!

I forgot to say you did a good job connecting the nipkow to the motor very little wobble another well done .

Thanks for the positive feedback! :)

Thought I'd toss up a quick video of it running...does a bit more justice to the televisor picture than that photo.

Hopefully it can be viewed...I used an Xvid compression on the clip to keep it small...

Well done MMX.
Excellent results.

Tell me what are the 4 scribbles on the front panel of your unit?!
Obviously technically important.

Kind regards,

Graham

From left to right:

Power, Volume, Motor, and really nothing. It's just scribble left on the part from the previous projekt that scrap piece was from.

Try to paint or spray the Nipkow disc black at the side where you view the picture. As long as it is white the reflected light against the magnifying glass will illuminate the surface of the disc and this will spoil the black parts of your picture.

Also the disc will be somewhat transparent. Light from the lightbox will come through the disc and will also spoil the parts of your picture that should be black. Spraying the front side of the disc black will block that light as well.

I think you will be amazed by the improvement that this simple action will bring to you.....
