The amount of light was so low, that for Baird this was not wise. Even the neon plate lamp gave so little light that you need to look at it in total darkness.

Realize yourself that we had for tens of years LED's that gave just light enough to indicate that some circuit is on or off. It is rather recent that LEDs were developped that gave enough light to read the newspaper.

On the other hand, it is very likely that a diode emits light when you sen d a current through it. Normal silicon diodes are giving light so far in the IR region that nobody has ever looked at it.

Indeed Klaas, there is a great deal of good old Anglo-Saxon "tongue in cheek" in the title. ;-)

(I have added a wink smiley to the title to avoid any confusion ;-)).

Captain Henry Joseph Round was an exceptional engineer BTW, worth looking up.
