A unique birthday gift!

Postby Steve Anderson » Tue Sep 14, 2010 12:31 am

I was out shopping for a friends' birthday gift without a clue what to get...

...until I came across this, I thought it so useful I bought one for myself!

Oh nice. You need a toothpick to operate the dial. I could as well use the small screwdriver that I mostly have with me.

By the way, years ago we were in Sweden. Telephones there had a dial that started with 0, not with 1. So 0 .... 9. I expect that 0 was 1 pulse, 1 was 2 pulses and so on. It must have been a trick of Ericsson to keep other telephone builders out of the market. But it worked also if you dialed to other countries. Weird

A proper gift from an NBTVA-member is also this new "Playstation 2":

A client of mine in the UK still uses one of these UK TRIMphones, a 1968 model, it's pulse only having a dial, not tone. I surprised that modern exchanges can still handle pulse dialing.

I've got one of them in my workshop and in my office a more traditional GPO phone - after a lightning surge blew the PSU in my snazzy 1984 ICL One Per Desk....

Trouble is its quite cold and the grease in the dials has gone hard so it is quite difficult to dial and all the numbers are so bloody long these days!

Ten years ago, i wanted to use my old telephone with a pre-paid card.
The voice told me "enter the 15 numbers of the card"
-drrr drrr drrr ( noise of the dial  )
-"now enter the phone number you want to call"
(ten numbers )
-drr drrr drr etc.. :?

-"now, push the # key"
-" :o "

I felt so silly  there is no key and no # or * on this phone

Awesome ! :o
I still have an analog line wich handle tone and pulse, but I know someone who only have VoIP and wants to use an old phone :P
Thanks for her :P

edit :
http://www.mediafire.com/?myyjyzyayzo
here is a picture of my desk
dial phone, tone phone ( with * # bis ring and speaker ), minitel. All on the same line. Under the desk I have a typewriter from the 80's.
The TV above the minitel is full analog and black and white. Analog transmitions stops this night in my region.
( By this picture ( taken by polaroid  ) i wanted to show on another forum that if i put the tv above the minitel, the picture of the minitel is shown on the tv )
