In the USA, there is a project, MUSOPEN, to free classical music from copyright.
Many classical composers have been dead many years so copyright on their scores has elapsed, but not on the performer, who have their own rights.
Here is a small extract from the projects aims........

"Musopen (www.musopen.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on improving access and exposure to music by creating free resources and educational materials. We provide recordings, sheet music, and textbooks to the public for free, without copyright restrictions. Put simply, our mission is to set music free."

AND.......

"Musopen was founded by Aaron Dunn while attending Skidmore College. The project began as an experiment and has since become one of the most popular and extensive copyright free public domain music sources on the web."

I cannort see any snags in using this music in the UK. There is a very large selection, under various headings..Composer/Performer/Instrument/
Period and Form.

Over 100 composers are listed !!
All nicely laid out, so one can listen to a short extract before downloading.
Music scores also can be downloaded.

The orchestral pieces are performed by the Skidmore College Orchestra,
which the founder attended.

One snag might be if a performer is British and his rights extend to UK law, but that is unlikely.
One can download up to 5 pieces per day without registering.......don't forget to make a small donation. :)
