Saw this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cn83jR2mchw on YouTube which is about a rotary encoder involving a LED transmitter, a slotted disc and a photo sensor and immediately thought of it as a modern off-shoot invention of the Nipkow disc so thought I'd share it with you all.
