The EPROM method might be a go-er and it's good to know assistance could be on tap here - thanks! However the brain is very adept at noticing repeating noise patterns even when the re-cycling period is more than ten seconds - I found this once, when I built a sea shore generator using pseudo-random noise. True random is to be preferred, especially if it can be done with only a few components. More anon.

This seems to do what I want pretty well... even without a low pass filter.

The input noise (coming from that other circuit + an extra transistor stage) is adjustable and currently about 6v p-p.

When the spike intensity pot is set to greatest intensity, this circuit produces very good narrow band (tunable) 'normal' noise too.
