Baird Testcard

Postby DrZarkov » Fri Mar 06, 2009 7:45 am

I found this testcards from Baird's 240 lines system. Does anybody know that lady? Maybe there is a better photo available to remake that testcard for our purposes?

Chris Long (movie historian) immediately identified her as Madeleine Carroll and the picture being from the film was "I Was A Spy" (1933).

Apparently a similar photo is in Don McLeans book "Restoring Baird's Image" page 189.

I am not that good with faces but this is she and seems to be right:

I was just touching up this test card a bit to use in my homemade test dvd just for the hell of it, and noticed that the aspect ratio is 1.25:1. Is this correct shape of the 240 line Baird screen and where can I get more info on it?

There is an interesting discussion on it here:

http://www.transdiffusion.org/emc/baird ... aspect.php

Not sure how definitive it is - information about the 240 line system appears to be quite scarce.

PS: I have a second source that indicates it was 240 X 320 pixels (4:3)

Agreed, I did however get all of the technical specification for both the German/French 180-line and Bairds' 240-line system via an appeal on another forum...that is with the exception of the 240-line aspect ratio.

For the time being I have made the assumption that it's 4:3, whereas the 180-line system is known to be 5:4.

I'll post that information here should anyone request it...that is when I get my new two-week old HP PC fixed! It just died on me, I suspect the BIOS chip has failed or one rail of the PSU...hopefully later today it'll back on its feet.

Steve A.

The next day...PC is now OK, the memory module (RAM) wasn't quite in its socket....how did I miss that!!

No, that's what I meant, I was referring to the subject of the photo (Madeleine Carroll) not the photo (object) itself, and I would never refer to such a distinguished lady as an "it"!
