Project: Field sequential 2 colour camera/monitor system

Forum for discussion of electronic television. Generally, stuff to do with CRTs and not using mechanical displays.

I have now uploaded to YouTube the a 12 part video series of construction and testing of this field sequential 2 colour system, click here http://www.youtube.com/user/troysvisual ... eos?view=0 to view them on my channel.

I have also uploaded a telerecording of this colour system in operation which I recorded on a colour vidicon camera which can be viewed here www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA-b5MHJvyo . That camera was ideal for less flicker but not ideal in terms of sensitivity and sharpness so I made another telerecording with a CCD camera which goes for 40 minutes, I have yet to upload it but will soon.

I have been experimenting today with the colour system by placing a red bucket, blue bucket and green container out in the driveway and aiming the camera towards them and with the sunlight the colours of them come up nice and rich!!!:D Of course in the vicinity of the red to green colour spectrum but the blue bucket surprisingly did have a bit of a bluish look to it still! Anyhow I have made a mobile phone video recording of it and attached is some video stills from the phone telerecording:

Just for a laugh here are the buckets shown in Baird's 15 line frame sequential colour:

(perhaps your next mechanical tv project?)

Hi Troy well done ,looks good from the photos once again my net is slow so have to wait to view the videos ,its for sure something to try and a very good use of old video gear !

Like the bucket tests @@@ !

A very good learning tool for me an i am sure for others .
The electromagnetic spectrum has no theoretical limit at either end. If all the mass/energy in the Universe is considered a 'limit', then that would be the only real theoretical limit to the maximum frequency attainable.

Thanks for the demo video Gary, I have some thoughts of building a mechanical colour TV sometime down the track.

Thanks Harry, this experiment was a lot of fun and the fact it works is awesome alone!!!:D I really wanted it to work with the vidicon cameras but the lag factor inhibits the colour reproduction but oh well, the main thing is colour pictures are displaying on a B&W viewfinder monitor!:D

G'day all.

I have now neatly removed the red/green cellophane filter wheel from the perspex wheel and have added an orange/aqua cellophane filter wheel to the perspex wheel to test out the orange/aqua field sequential 2 colour system and it also works nicely!!!:D The orange segments are made of one red cellophane layer and three yellow cellophane layers and the aqua segments are made of two layers of blue cellophane and two layers of green cellophane.

I am getting a nice mix of colours within the orange to aqua spectrum and the pictures look quite interesting and more resembling the two strip technicolour system of the 1920s!!!:D I am going to soon make some telerecordings of it in operation but in the meantime I have made a mobile phone video of it in operation and here below are some snaps from the video along with pics of the new orange/aqua filter. The red/green filter is still intact should I like to re-attach it later.

Before removing the red/green filter wheel I have done more telerecordings which I will soon put to YouTube, one of which is a pre-recorded video of myself and colour objects which I displayed on video on my computer monitor to be telerecorded from the 2 colour system. I have uploaded a 40 minute long telerecording I made the other night of my red/green system in operation using CCD camera which the colours and picture come up better:

Anyways stay tuned for more videos/pics!:)

Thanks Gary!:)

Okay, I have just made a pre-recorded video of myself in front of the camera displaying colourful objects and have displayed the video on my computer monitor which I filmed with my field sequential 2 colour system and telerecorded it on a CCD camera. Thought I'd make a formal video for my 2 colour system!:D The video can be viewed on YouTube in the following link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcodoADcqb4
As I'm manually braking the spindle to keep the colour wheel in sync the sync of the wheel drifts a bit so you'll see the bottom part of the picture go out of phase and have the inverse colours and drifting up and down.

I have now added more videos to the video series of this field sequential 2 colour system, have added parts 13 to 17 on my channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/troysvisualarts/videos
Parts 16 and 17 are of the new orange/aqua filtered colour wheel.

I've added a couple more telerecordings of my red/green field sequential colour system in operation, one is of videos and pics displayed on my computer screen and the other is from my webcam displayed on screen while I film around my bedroom, here are the links:

I've just made a telerecording of my system using the orange/aqua filter and will add that to YouTube soon too.

G'day all. Got some great news.

I have been looking at my newvicon/saticon tube cameras and have realised they have very little lag compared to the vidicons so I decided to test my colour system with my 1984 Sharp XC-54 camera http://troysvintagevideo.0catch.com/xc54.html and found it to work reproducing the colours quite nicely.

Now for even better news, I realized with my late 60s/early 70s Concord NEI-17 1" vidicon tube camera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzUwJ5N5fhQ when the target voltage is properly adjusted the after image lag/persistence becomes very minimal and I tried out my colour system with that camera and to my joy it works!!!:D The colours are reproduced nicely!!!:D

I don't have pics yet but will upload some soon along with some videos.

Did you fix the vertical deflection problem on the old studio camera ...thats a nice old one its good you can do the 2 colour system with those to..great experments for sure .

I've now taken some video grabs from the mobile phone videos I made of my colour system in operation with both my 1984 Sharp XC-54 newvicon colour camera and with my 60s/70s Concord NEI-17 B&W vidicon camera fiming 3 buckets of the primary colours red, green and blue. The red bucket shows up as orange, the blue bucket comes up blue and the green bucket sort of came up a greenish colour. I will soon add the videos to YouTube. Anyhow here below are pics of the video grabs and the cameras positioned behind the colour filter wheel:
