Problems accessing this site?

Postby gary » Tue Jun 19, 2007 4:55 pm

For a couple of days now I have been experiencing long delays (a minute or more) in accessing pages on the forum. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this?

I am not experiencing any abnormal delays accessing other sites and it may well be just another in a long list of *Vista* related problems I have been having. sigh.

Yes, for about a week or two it has been slow, but I haven't experienced the delays you have. Mostly they're under 20 seconds or so, but that can cause the odd time-out.

It tends to vary from day-to-day. For example today it's been fine. I put it down to the connection to my ISP at first, it's the wet season here and communications does sometimes become severly disrupted. But seeing you're having similar delays tends to make me think otherwise.

The only delays I've noticed are for the download of large pix files.

For the first few minutes the download speed is flagged at something ridiculous like 200 bps or so, then the file comes through in a rush.

Yes that is how I am experiencing it also except that it is happening on all downloads including html pages, almost like it is taking a long time to make the initial connection but once it does it downloads in a flash.

Thinking about it again this looks like a DNS problem which could be anywhere, it'll probably right itself when a server gets rebooted somewhere out there...

Thanks guys at least I don't have to waste time looking for a local problem.

I have passed these reports of speed issues to the support section of the webhost I use (www.icdsoft.com). These guys are good -- really, really good -- typically < 5 minute turnaround on any support issue, 24 hours a day. THe response I have received is...

Hello,

I checked the server load and it is normal. I also performed test connections from several Australian ISPs and the response time was good.

Could you please execute the following command under a Command Prompt window:

tracert taswegian.com

and let us know its output? Please execute the command at a time when you are experiencing the problem.

To start the Command Prompt window you should type CMD in the Run dialog.

Best Regards,
Support

So, could everyone who is experiencing speed issues please follow the above instructions, and cut/paste the results either to this forum or directly via email to me. We'll soon find the issue and fix things up.

Trace response.

Here's the result of the trace I just did, but at the moment all is OK, when it 'gums up' next time I'll do it again.

And support has already replied...

The traceroutes show that there is a problem within ALTER.NET which are large Australian provider.

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to fix this problem as it is outside of our networks (and outside the networks of the upstreams we use).
You (your users) should contact their local internet provider which should be able to offer assistance in resolving this issue.

Best Regards,
Support

So, I guess we might best follow the above advice.

Although the output of TRACERT doesn't mean a lot to me, I wondered whether another example from a different part of the globe might help one way or another to those for whom it does mean something:

Well, the first response was very fast, but even some 10,000km away none of mine ran to a tenth of yours. Mine were almost at the speed of light, (some 10,000km) as they should be on a good day...but 327ms, that's a no-no.

Hmmm thinking about this again it can't be ALTER.NET as I don't appear to be passing through that network, nor are others it seems.

The tracert values shown don't seem to be out of the ordinary. I wonder why they thought ALTER.NET were at fault?

never-the-less I sahll see if my ISP can determine anything.
