Thanks, Albert. That is a fun story. Herr Nipkow's concept probably would have worked at the time if he had kept it non-electric, as we have discussed. The constabulary could have covertly monitored the activities of suspicious characters about Whitechapel with non-electric tellies in full colour.

Well, what an interesting site, and the link to Wiki is well worth it too...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photophone

How I missed this posting I don't know. It's related to the "NBTV on FM" thread on this forum.

A friend and I tried modulating DC powered flourescent tubes with audio in the early 70s for the same purpose, but we weren't that succesful. At the time we lived in Warrandyte, Victoria. We only lived about 1km apart which normally would have been a quick bicycle ride. But there was a barrier....the Yarra River. This meant a long detour across the nearest bridge.

My parents (rightly) complained about the amout of time I was spending on the phone, so Phil and I tried to set up an optical link. We almost got it working, but we relocated, and that was the end of it.

I wonder if there is a Photophone forum?

Doubt it.
Plenty of scientific forums though, like this one etc etc which has an experimental section.

You could throw a photophone stone into its waters and see what spash it made. :)

The same system had been used by the german company "Tri-Ergon" in the early 20th. They wanted to use it for movies, but the success was not so great. Later they used this system for recording records, with more success. Later the system had been sold to William Fox, who used it since 1928 for making movies with sound.

The great advantage of optical sound recording on film is that it's inherently DC coupled, which negates the problems that an audio CD intoduces.

There is no reason why an audio CD couldn't be DC coupled, it's just the manufactures don't (quite rightly) see any reason for it.
