I would think that we would need some new software then. After all, the original is dated.
Fun times, ain't it?

Same solution should fix it.

An avi is a container not a format and the video inside could be one of a number of video formats - again if you post the video or a part of the video I can tell you what it is - in most cases.

I used to be able to say if it plays in windows media player it can be converted by Video2NBTV, unfortunately WMP started to move away from DirectShow a few years ago and so that is no longer necessarily true, but it's still a good basic test.

Another approach if you prefer to investigate yourself is to download GraphEdit:
graphedt.zip
(148.69 KiB) Downloaded 549 times
.

If it plays in this it should definitely be available to Video2NBTV.

It depends. MP4 is more of a metadata container than a format in it's own right.

The video in it can be MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264, and MPEG-4 part 2.

Not all filters will cater for all of those video formats.

On my computer the one that plays mp4 videos downloaded from Youtube is the Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder which I think is installed when you install Windows Media Centre.

That, I am pretty sure requires W7 - so it's just not all that straight forward.

You could just Google "mp4 directshow filter" and install one or more until it works, but really, it would be simpler if you could post an example of the video that doesn't work as there may be other issues.

Where did you download it? I can't seem to find it.

This seems like a good place to download it from:

Well as I wrote mine was I am pretty sue installed with Windows Media Centre which is part of Windows 7 Home Premium
To enable it I had to do something similar to this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8REAnt6S84

BUT! There are plenty of other options about and you may not want or have Windows Media Centre - if that is the case just do the Google search I mentioned and pick one.

Did you install it? A directshow filter needs to be installed not just downloaded. Usually the package you download installs it when you run it. Sometimes they come as .ax files and you need to install them manually - I can explain how to do that if that is the case.

Can you play the video with another application? If so which one?

Did you download and run GraphEdit and attempt to play it with that?

If you did all that and it still doesn't work the only way I can help you is for you to give me an example of the video that doesn't work

DirectShow filters are COM objects, typically, but not always, packaged in DLLs.
