"Television For The Amateur Constructor" (1933)

Postby chris_vk3aml » Thu Dec 04, 2008 2:33 pm

These postings from Barton-Chapple's "Television For The Amateur Constructor" (Pitman's, London, 1933) were designed for the following size and configuration of aluminium scanning disc:

Thickness of aluminium disc = 32 S.W.G. = 0.0108 inches = 0.2734 mm (this is substantially thinner than the present NBTVA club discs!)
Diameter = 20 inch = 51 cm (substantially bigger than most club discs).
Number of lines/apertures = 30, each 0.028 inches = 0.7 cm square, punched to provide square shape.
Picture aspect ratio: 3 horizontal: 7 vertical, vertical scan lines.
Picture repetition rate = 12.5 pictures per second, no interlace.

I am reproducing the following chapters on this initial posting:

Chapter 2: "A [Mechanical Television] Workshop In The Home" pps 36 to 47.
Chapter 9: "Building Television Apparatus [from Baird Junior Kit]" pps. 167 to 177.
Chapter 10: "Bulding Television Apparatus [making all parts]" pps 178 to 211.

Does anyone know the HP (Horse Power) rating on the Baird disk motor?

My apologies for all these Newbie questions...

I am sure it's a fractional rating. Also, most motor I am finding want to spin around 1500 rpm's. Will the baird electromagnetic sync mechanism slow a motor down from 1500 to the 750 rpm rate that is needed?

Hi Chris,

Would you mind if I pick-up your clippings of "Television for the Amateur Constructor" to post them on my website Histoire de la télévision", which provides with a rather comprehensive collection of texts on early television ? See : https://www.histv.net/anthologie-des-premiers-textes and https://www.histv.net/1930-1936

Thanks.

Unfortunately, Chris is no longer on this forum. You might be able to contact him on his email, vocalion1928@hotmail.com, which is found on his website, http://www.modulatedlight.org . No guarantees his email will work though, since the last time the site was updated was in 2010.
Fun times, ain't it?

Clearly Chris doesn't own the copyright to these. It depends on the laws in your country but I would guess you're in the clear here.
He also posted this a decade ago(!) so I am also he wouldn't care if someone used it like you are describing.

Just my opinion
