First Televisor build (15" stainless steel disc)

Hello everybody,

as promised, here's the seperate thread about the construction of my first Televisor using the club's 15 inch stainless steel Nipkow disc.

I constructed the LED/sync and motor circuit as they're described in the handbook, the only difference being that I replaced two resistors on the motor PCB with a potentiometer in order to control the amout of PLL control over the RPM according to a hint I got from Klaas. I've also omited the 10 Ohm resistor in the motor's positive lead.

The LED matrix consists of 8 ultra-bright white LEDs, each with their own resistor.
In order to get an even illumination, some distance was needed between the LEDs and the diffusor (two layers of the club's diffuser film). To achieve this, I constructed a roll from thick cardboard to use it as a "light tunnel".

The motor used is an industrial quality pancake (or disc) motor. Luckily, the shaft of the motor measures exactly 6mm, just like the center hole of the disc. To fix the disc to the motor, I took an old toothed wheel that has a 6mm bore as well and can be fixed to the shaft with two grub screws. That wheel, I glued to the Nipkow disc with some industrial grade polymer glue. The glueing power of that stuff is crazy. I ran the TV for about an hour since it was constructed and so far, the disc stays in place. As the motor shaft goes through the toothed wheel and the Nipkow disc, the radial forces while spinning are taken by the shaft and not the glue.

The rest of the device is constructed mainly from MDF and various bits and pieces I had laying around in the workshop.
The audio amplifier is a cheap kit I once bought for a few Euros which drives a tiny speaker.

I tried to capture the process in a few pictures as good as possible.
Please see the photos attached, each with a short description.
If you have any questions, suggestions, please let me know.

Please note that the case is still in the early stage and will look a lot nicer in the end (hopefully) :D

Looking Good Sebastian,

I was a little worried about the exposed disc at first but you have housed it nicely and it looks good. I myself use the switch mode power supplies from China as these are relatively cheap to buy.

Anyway Best wishes and on with your next project.

I have to say that disc is spot on. That's one of the best pictures I have seen. The edge of the frame is so straight. The lines have a near perfect spacing. Well done. I would have been tempted to leave the disc more visible as it is such a thing of beauty.

Cheers
Keith

Keith,
I can not take credit for the disc as it is the laser cut stainles steel disc from the club shop. But I agree with you, the quality of the disc and thus the resulting image is indeed superb.
And a thing of beauty it is too, that's true as well. But I agree with Chris here, a thin large metal disc spinning with 750 rpm can be quite dangerous

The next project is going to be a disc based camera. The electronic components are already waiting in the workshop. I will keep you updated.

I was thinking more along the lines of having a large acrylic window or the likes on the box so you can see it in action and be safe at the same time. I guess my disc being 6mm thick acrylic makes it very safe to run fully open.

A camera sounds great, I am looking forward to seeing your progress, We made some great headway on my dual mirror drum TV this week. Like all projects, they take a lot of time and effort.
