Baird Lens Box and Face plate

Postby McGee2021 » Mon Dec 19, 2016 2:04 pm

I am going to model parts for a baird lens box, the type seen on televisors, so i can 3d print them and place it on a televisor model. I was wondering if any body also had any detailed drawings or sketches that i could use to make the most accurate model that i could. I am also going to have somebody model a Baird face plate, also seen of the original televisor, and was wondering if anybody had any crude
( nope, no detailed sketches needed this time!) measurements for this also, so i could print it and use it on said replica.

As for the neon tube replica, work on it is slow, but surely marching forward for the moment.

I have such a face plate demounted and I placed it on the flat bed scanner. This gives a picture of 150 pixels per inch (or 300 pixels per inch), or whatever I enter in the resolution box. To start with: 150 pix/inch. Does this help? I know that Dennis Asseman years ago made a negative mould of this plate in silicone mass and made a copy in that mould in some brown plastic.

I have sent a request for it to be modeled. Klaas, if you have any simple measurements for it, they would be much appreciated, since my computer doesn't want to tell me how many pixels wide and/or tall it is after i cropped your images to get a more precise measurement!

Paint Shop Pro tells me it is 5.45 x 5.835 inches

I am not sure if the following is helpful or not, you should find it interesting at least if you haven't already seen it:

The dimensions could be re-engineered, at least roughly, from the dimensions of the disk - NipkowDXF gives me the height of the picture as 1 7/8" high.

Using that figure gives the height of the mask, and using that gives the height of the lens box at roughly 5 1/2 - 6" high - etc etc.

I think a method similar to this gave scientists the size of the dinosaurs from small fragments of bones. :-)

Peter Smith has sent me dimensions, which he created in 1990. I have started to create models for 3d printing.

According to Television For The Amateur Constructor on page 195 "The specification for these lenses is one 6 in. diameter (single convex) and one 4 in. diameter (double convex) with focal lengths of 17 in. and 11.5 in. respectively."

Here is what i have design in the past few weeks for the lens box on Autodesk Inventor. As soon as i have all of the part designed and have made sure that they are all compatible with each other, 3d printing will begin. Dimensions courtesy of Peter Smith. Updates will be posted shortly.

The only problem now is finding lens that are to original specifications...

You could try this site: http://www.surplusshed.com/lens.cfm Haven't bought from them yet, but it seems they have quite a selection.

So far i have 3d printed the large lens holder, the blackout box, and the main chassis. Tomorrow im heading out to buy bolts to hold it all together, because right now its being held together with strips of copper wire! I also broke out the foreign coin collection to give our international members an idea of how big it really is...

Also, i only seem to be able to upload one attachment per post, if i add more than that, the forum logs me out and deletes what i had written on my post.

Having done a lot of 3D printing myself, watching this one with interest. If you're using ABS, I can highly recommend acetone vapour (be careful!) as a fantastic smoothing post-processing. Just use a sealed jar and dangle the print somehow above a small amount of acetone. Be careful, though - flammable... you only need to leave it for a few hours and you get a smooth as glass finish.

Just one note - your pictures don't show up as pictures because they are too wide/big. They thus appear as attachments. If you resample the pictures to (say) 640 pixels wide, then they will appear "inline" in your posts, which is much better for those reading.

This is very odd, and not by design. What browser and OS are you using?
