The testcard center !

Postby Lowtone » Mon Dec 05, 2011 7:50 pm

Hello, they are called test cards, test pattern, testbild, carta de ajuste or mire, and they are not only pretty abstrac pictures but also useful technical tools.
As NBTV need some time to synch, we need reliable testcards.
Many people has made testcards for NBTV, for different formats, for colour, and so on. Since my childhood i have collected many analog TV testcards on VHS, and i really like them. And now I like NBTV testcards too.
Maybe you are doing something with NBTV and you need testcards, but where to find the exact testcard you need ?
The answer is here !
I will put online all the testcards i've found, but i also need your help.

Here are the main rules
At first I will take the files like i found them, JPG, PNG, WAV.
Maybe I will try to make audio conversions of pictures files, and vice versa.
If I can I will try to make th pictures better.
I will give a number to each picture. Provide some information if i can ( and you can help me for that )
-the name of the drawer
-the format / number of line
-the date
-the purpose of the testcard ( ex: testing colours )
-others notes

For some of them I didn't remember who made them.
If people wants their testcards to be removed from the list, just ask me ( or a moderator ) and it will be removed.
I will set the files on Mediafire. I will edit each time i could.
If you have thoses testscards in a better quality, you can bring them too. Also if you have others testcards, old or new.

Checkerboards are also useful, so i will include them too, but they are not always intended to be testcards.

first the Historical pictures, numbered by #-A-0000 system, then our testcards by #-B-0000. So if we want to refer to an unknown picture with no name, it will have a number. Some titles are "made titles" and can change if we find the real names, please always use the number to refers to a specific testcard, it would be safety.
If i make mistakes, please correct me
I hope you'll enjoy this project !

The testpattern B0001 is designed by the late Grant Dixon. It should be referred to as the Grant Dixon Testpattern.

Grant did a lot of good things to NBTV, so he should be honoured in this way.

The test picture A0007 could be better called "Sag test" as that is what it does. It tests the LF response flatness of the video channel. However I don't know if Baird knew the word "sag" yet for it.

And then please look at the spelling of my name.....

Nice work putting all those together. one of the longest posts ive seen on the forum. oh, and #B-0015 is parallel RGB from Peter Smith's Color Bar Generator (Vol.34 No.4) and B-0017 is 32 lines, not 60.

# B-0009, B-00010 and B-00023 are made by me. You'll find them (and some others, for example some of the club-CDs, also in WAV) on my website, http://www.zarkovision.de/testbilder.html

Danke! I remember your site, that is where i've found the #-B-0022 off MUTR kit. I will also scan the one of the booklet.
I also found other testcards on this forum, so i will make the update this week.
Thanks all for your guidance

Great work, your collection may be of interest even for...graphic arts students and modern artists (I don't laugh).
Something nostalgic, I remember myself as a boy, desperately trying to tune up Soviet television sets, I lived in USSR then. These TVs were very unstable, had lots of controls at their back, and to get a correct circle or colour was a challenge...
Maybe it's funny, but I did not use ANY test card for my NBTV projects ever. I do care about true grayscale, fine detail and right geometry. And with colour experiments I could make some kind of special orange-blue testcard - but I did not...
There is something in human face (and voice) that makes it very sensitive to deviations of any kind. So footage with closeup faces can make a pretty good testcard.

@Holtzman: I've recorded some testcards in summer 1986 on Super 8! You can see them here: http://youtu.be/Y8QfWs_jbZA
Almost every day it was possible to receive the transmitter "Leningrad" (as you can see in the film). In that time I used a colour TV by Sharp, now I have two soviet Televizors: A Junost 603 (Юность-603) and an Elektronika 407 D (Электроника-407), which was sold here in Germany as "Orbiter 416", sometimes also as "MiniStar 416". Luckily thanks to sporadic-E there is sometimes still a signal on VHF I with the right weather conditions.

Do you know that website about russian TV-sets: http://rw6ase.narod.ru/000/tw.html ?

Back to topic: I was always fascinated by testcards, and I was always happy to se anything but our standard Grundig or Philips PM5544 testcards here in this area.

I have now even DVDs with testcards, but of course I prefer to receive them live on air.

The electromagnetic spectrum has no theoretical limit at either end. If all the mass/energy in the Universe is considered a 'limit', then that would be the only real theoretical limit to the maximum frequency attainable.

The date of design of your test pattern B0003 is 1979. On the back side of NBTV Newsletter Vol 5 No 1 this pattern is printed. It is from an original design of Roy Prescott.

And the pattern B0004 appeared on the front cover of Newsletter Vol 9 No 1 from July 1983. I can't find a name connected to it.

Thanks for your reschearchs and comments :D I will make the new update

Steeve > i already knew and read ALL those sites  There are very interesting infos and pictures.

holtzman wrote: Great work, your collection may be of interest even for...graphic arts students and modern artists (I don't laugh).

Work of art made from testcards exists andyes it could be possible to have some interset about the graphisms of these abstract pictures. They look like abstract painting on their own. In the 90's i made one little painting with vertical colour bars ;)

Wow ! this is amazing ! too bad S8 always makes those effects due to framerate but it is a piece of archive very amazing !

DrZarkov wrote: Back to topic: I was always fascinated by testcards, and I was always happy to se anything but our standard Grundig or Philips PM5544 testcards here in this area.

When i was 9 I had cable-tv and i was fascinated by the TVE-i testcard with the orange background
You get russian testcards, was your tv sécam too ? Did you get DDR tv too ?
http://www.tvnt.net/forum/mire-marly-et-ortf-819-et-625-lignes-t29109.html Here I made a compilation of franch testcards from the 40's to 70's.

DrZarkov wrote: I have now even DVDs with testcards, but of course I prefer to receive them live on air.

Hehe ! I bought an electronic generator for pal/secam 625 line. Service SA 3820 http://retro-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=236544 ( same model as this )
( those generators have modulators in them, it could be useful for pirate tv  )

edit : update done because i'm done for today
but it is not ever, i found new testcards on youtube too

EDIT : are there historical testcards from other coutries ? i wonder what they had in the USA

The "moving face testcard" ist made by my ex-wife, Sanneke. The face is Alan Rickman. :)

Here I have another historic testcard by the "Fernsehsender Paul Nipkow":

And this is a later testcard, from the 180/441 line television service:

Danke! War das bild "fernsehsender Paul Nipkow" für mechanik oder elektronisch Fernsehen ?

Smaal update : I've added the infos for testcards #-B-0070 to #-B-0073, and add some testcards.
I have others to add, this is not over.
I don't know why am i always put those kind of work on me
on another website i'm translating a dictionnary

I found those testcards

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHkxFInJ9FA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc759yJrNIU
I tried to play the lossy sound of the second one, but the result was worst than this video

( electronic wise i've found 2 historical testcards here at 10:00 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xeta73 ... -vi_webcam .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn7tA0pFJ8w there was a movie ( en français ) about this. They re-created the testcard Image and this is the only original photograph i know. It was 441 line . )

But i'm interested in mechanical tv only here. I put the testcard of Radio Vision PTT here because it was at first mechanical and later electronic )
