Global Chip Shortage.

The global chip shortage, has it affected you? It has me.

I have two active NBTV/SSTV projects on hold due to suppliers not having the devices I need, plus another not related (real work).

One supplier is quoting April next year for delivery of some 64Mb (8MB) Flash memory! How can we get anything done? Especially if you make a living out of circuit design and need to demonstrate prototypes? (Me). Next there'll be a glut due to overproduction...at least it should bring the prices down (wishful thinking).

Added later...actually make that three NBTV/SSTV projects on-hold...

...now I've been quoted delivery of some J-FET op-amps (TL082s/TL084s} in 2024! This is getting silly!!

Cricklewood electronics in UK have this TL084CN if OK for you. Contact them for international delivery......
or I can buy and send on to you.

Ooops sorry it refers back to TL074

It would appear to be TL074CN that Cricklewood has.

Thanks gents...but I'm talking in industrial quantities for a client, generally 10,000+. Ordering through a distributor (RS, Farnell, etc.) generally makes them a lot more expensive, it's better to go to the manufacturer direct and/or a second-source supplier. For the TLxx series, Texas, second-sourced by STM.

The likes of RS etc. are fine when developing prototypes or a limited 'pilot run' of say 25 units, after that you go to the source direct.

Perhaps my previous posting was out of context, I should have mentioned the quantities required...but even in small quantities there still are delays...

I have been affected. I make the occasional WiFi capable cartridge for the Atari 2600 (a 1977 game machine connecting to the internet - how arcane!). It's called the PlusCart if you're interested in looking it up. Anyway, the PlusCart needs STM (ARM microprocessor) development boards, which I used to buy from AliExpress for about US$7 each. They're currently about US$15 each. The bare chip (i.e., NOT on the development board) is apparently near-impossible to order at the moment. Anyone listing for sale generally just cancels your order and refunds money straight away.

If you can make purchases from U.S. companies, Mouser Electronics has several hundred TL084CN op-amps available:

https://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine?Keyword=TL084CN

while Digi-Key Electronics (unfortunately) has none available through Texas Instruments:

However, there are more than 85,000 TI chips available from Digi-Key through a separate supplier (Rochester Electronics, LLC):

Thanks John, however we increased the order to 150,000 and were able to be catapaulted up the food-chain, we should get the shipment end next month (August) which is as best as we can hope for. Stockpiling, seems everyone's doing it.

As I mentioned, we don't use distributors 1) They rarely have enough stock, 2) The distributors price is often double than going direct to the manufacturers.

Distributors are fine for development on a small 'pilot run' of say 50 units, after that they become a massive financial burden.

A part-shipment arrived today (122,000), the remainder as quoted at the end of this month...so Microchip are trying...maybe we were lucky, someone couldn't wait and cancelled their order...

Meanwhile, a quote from a different supplier for a different chip...delivery January 2023!

Thankfully passives, resistors, caps and so on haven't been affected to any noticeable extent...even discrete components, diodes, transistors etc..are no problem...
