Are there any Nipkow disks available for sale? Would like one around 12" or more.

Let me know.

Thanks!

You could visit the 'Official' NBTVA Website and it's Club Sales sub-section. It's a starting point maybe, it doesn't appear to have been updated in years, so good luck...there are pre-drilled discs listed, but no working links (at least not here). Give it a try, your mileage may vary...click 'Clubshop'...

...however, probably better to also ask here as you have already done...

Yeah, I did the same thing as you, Steve. It's easy enough to get another record or something to drill holes. If someone had a disk laying around that would have been good to.

thanks!

I received the following from Peter Spies via e-mail...

Hi Steve,
For Your Information (and Peter Fischel's) -

NBTV club sales is handled by Chris Lewis, who is very helpful, as you know.
It is not a web shop. Members receive an updated 'E sales list' with
every NBTV News Letter issue.
I attached the most recent list for your convenience. Info on how to
order at the top of the first page.
I think only members can order; but a so called 'e-subscription' only
costs only GBP 3.50 (this year, if you're outside the U.K., and pay
through Paypal).
The 'membership' registration page of the website does work, I believe.
Scroll down for the Paypal button.

I use the 12" laser cut steel disc supplied by the club, and the quality
is astounding - on another level, compared with a 12" lp record punched
with a drill press..!
The second attachement shows colour pictures, displayed by my monitor,
using this disc.

Rgds., Peter

I hope that helps. Attached is the club E-Sales listing, I believe you need to be a member of the NBTVA to order....a snapshot of the 12' version is also attached...

It looks not so difficult to drill a Nipkow disc from an LP record, but the precision that you need is very difficult to achieve. Yes, you get a picture, but the distances between the lines will be varying and the vertical position of the lines will be varying as well. You may see on this forum results of that.

The NBTVA-discs are very precise and give you a much better quality. However it is best to try it first yourself using an LP-record and drill your holes. And after that buy the disc that Chris can provide you with, to be satisfied. Modern numeric laser cut production means make it possible. I wondered myself how they did this in the 1930 era.

Good luck!

Yeah somewhere on this board I had made a Mechanical TV with a record that I drilled. The images might have been deleted from when you all were attacked a few years back. It wasn't perfect but decent.

I am currently printing out an 11" disk on my 3D printer. I am sure the holes won't be too perfect but It can provide a place for me to use a drill vice to get nicer holes.

Hopefully this time I will do this until completion.

I had a nice set of emails over the 15" disk I wanted. I believe I will have one on the way.

Both Jeremy and Christopher have been great!

Thanks for the help.

Come to think of it Bairds original go's were not so bad wonder what he did it , the large holes for the lens disks must of been pretty hard to get right and early work was on cardboard ? hat box lids and like ?
The electromagnetic spectrum has no theoretical limit at either end. If all the mass/energy in the Universe is considered a 'limit', then that would be the only real theoretical limit to the maximum frequency attainable.

Well, that is one of the reasons that I like Mechanical TV's. If you look at the original spinning disks, they were not perfect at all. Wobbling about. If you wanted you can build one with some basic electronics, Legos, and a spinning cardboard disk (or hat). The barrier to entry is quite low and you can get a good feel from accomplishing something. From there you can update it to do more if you want.
