Phosphor to reduce flicker?

I was wondering if it might be possible to place a phosphorescent material, say on a glass plate, between the Nipkow disc and the eye. The idea is that the phosphor glow, however slight, would give a more persistant image and thus reduce the flicker apparent to the eye. Is this possible? Has anyone tried it?

John Logie Baird proposed such an approach in British Patent GB291121 filed 30 November 1926. Such a scheme should work, although for best results the activating light should have a short high-energy wavelength. You could use any of the common glow-in-the-dark plastic sheets that are available as a display screen and use a modulated ultraviolet LED or LED array as the light source for the display.
